2014 SURE Winners and Runner Ups

Biological & Health Sciences Category (24 posters)

Winner:Modified dextromethorphan displays antidepressant-like effects in the forced swim test in mice. Anna Scandinaro, Linda Nguyen & Rae Matsumoto. (Anna, a biochemistry major at WVU, was a participant in the Center for Neuroscience SURI program.)

Runner Up: Exploring the link between obesity and cardiovascular function independent of obesity related comorbidities. Kelly Devlin, Evan DeVallance, Sara Fournier, David Donnely & Paul Chantler. (Kelly, an exercise physiology major at WVU, was a participant in the WVU Honors administered SURE program.)

Runner Up:Effects of riluzole on an Alzheimer’s mouse model. Lindsey Mosmiller, Daniel Weitzner, Holly Hunsberger, Carolyn Rudy & Miranda Reed. (Lindsey, a psychology major at WVU, was a participant in the STEM SURE program.)

Agricultural & Environmental Sciences Category (19 posters)

Winner: High doses of cannabinoids (Tetrahydrocannabinol) suppress communication abilities in fish (Aperonotus leptorhynchus). Emily Artz, Malosree Maitra & Gary Marsat. (Emily, a psychology major at WVU, was a participant in the WVU Honors administered SURE program.)

Runner Up: Omega-3 fatty acids and soy protein promote fatty liver in polycystic liver disease. Sundus Lateef, Vagner Benedito & Janet Tou. (Sundus, a chemistry and biology double major at WVU, was a participant in the WVU Honors administered SURE program.)

Runner Up: Round up resistance in isolates of West Virginia yeasts. Catherine Blackwood, Jennifer Gallagher & Daniel Panaccione. (Catherine, a biology and psychology double major at WVU, was a participant in the STEM SURE program.) 

Physical Sciences & Engineering Category (23 posters)

Winner: Sensing detonation wave fronts in a pulse detonation engine. Taylor Gosnell, Eli Thorpe & Patrick Browning. (Taylor, a mechanical and aerospace engineering major at WVU, was a participant in the STEM SURE program.)

Runner Up: Hydrogen fuel production from acids: electrocatalytic proton reduction by cobalt (II). Trevor Butcher, Vaishali Vajpayee & Brian Popp. (Trevor, a chemistry major at WVU, was a participant in the WVU Honors administered SURE program.)

Runner Up: Examination of mechanisms of binding of Nt17 region of Huntingtin protein. Arlo Parker, James Arndt, Megan Maurer, Justin Legleiter & Stephen Valentine. (Arlo, a chemistry major at WVU, was a participant in the STEM SURE program.)

Specialty Fields Category (21 posters)

Winner: Increasing the efficiency of LEDs through the fabrication of photonic crystals using nanosphere lithography. Melanie Wieland, Taylor Price, Anand Kadiyala & Jeremy Dawson. (Melanie, an Electrical Engineering major at WVU, was a participant in the WVU Honors administered SURE program.)

Runner Up: Surface-enhanced raman scattering for biomolecule characterization. Julia Oliveto, Lei Chen, Canwei Jiang & Bing Zhao. (Julia, a chemistry major at Fairmont State University, was a participant in the STEM SURE/International Research at Jilin University in China.)

Runner Up: Immunoglobulin G biosensor based on surface-enhanced raman scattering. Stacy Farley, Peng Zheng & Nianqiang (Nick) Wu. (Stacy, a comprehensive chemistry major at Concord University, was a participant in the Nano REU program.)

What is SURE?

SURE is a summer undergraduate research experience for students interested in a career or graduate school experience in the scientific disciplines. Selected students will work in research labs at West Virginia University for 8 weeks during the summer under the direction of a WVU faculty research mentor and a graduate or post-doctoral mentor. This year research opportunities exist in The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, The Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, The School of Medicine and The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Review of completed applications will begin Friday February 21, 2014. Applicants will be admitted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled.

Who can Apply?

SURE applicants must be:

Science or engineering majors

Enrolled at a West Virginia higher education institution or be a West Virginia state resident enrolled in an out-of-state college or university.

US Citizens or resident aliens
