Eligibility Requirements
Freshmen are considered for admission to the University Honors College based on ACT or SAT composite standard scores, high school grade point average, and community service and extracurricular experience. Direct admission is based upon the following criteria.
* ACT composite score of 28 or an SAT combined score of 1240 and a
minimum GPA of 3.8.
If you fall just short of these criteria, you may still apply and will be considered for provisional status. Provisional students are not treated differently, including the opportunity to live in Stalnaker Hall. These students are however required to maintain a 3.2 GPA during their first semester. They must also provide supplemental materials, such as a resume and letters of recommendation, along with their application. Students who need to provide this extra information will be informed by the Honors Office. There are new rules for Provisional Admission. Please read below for the changes.
All prospective students are considered for admission to the Honors College after grades and scores have been verified by a high school counselor or have been obtained from the WVU admission application. Acceptance is confirmed upon submission of an essay on an assigned topic. Prospective students will be notified when it is time for them to submit an essay.
Current WVU students may join the Honors College if they have a 3.7 GPA for their first 14 to 34 credit hours of college work, with no withdrawals or incompletes. Students who transfer to WVU from an Honors Program at another institution can usually continue Honors study and receive Honors credit for previous Honors courses. Students with 34 hours or less who transfer from another institution's Honors Program may enter if their SAT or ACT scores and high school GPA are similar to WVU Honors College entrance requirements.
Transfer students who were not previously enrolled at an Honors Program may enter the WVU Honors College if they have 34 or fewer hours of credit and an overall GPA of 3.7 or better with no grades of I or W from an accredited institution.
Rising sophomore and junior Honors transfer students, with college GPAs which meet WVU standards for regularly admitted Honors students, will be accepted if the Honors admissions standards at the University from which a student is transferring are similar to those at WVU and if it appears that the transfer student can complete the requirements of the WVU Honors College for graduation.
There is no deadline for application. However, applying early is encouraged to ensure placement in Stalnaker Hall, the Honors Residence Hall, and to be considered for the most attractive scholarships.
PLEASE NOTE! IMPORTANT!Standardized test scores CANNOT be mixed to produce the highest score from various dates. All materials must be received, not postmarked, by the due dates given below. As of Fall 2007 the Provisional Admission Dates and Deadlines have been modified. The new system will have Provisional Admits chosen in 3 separate rounds. Only after submission of all the required materials can a student be considered in a Provisional Admit round.
