Application, non-technical abstract, and faculty recommendation letter (on institutional letterhead & uploaded by advisor) for the spring 2017 Posters on the Hill event (see http://www.cur.org/conferences_and_events/student_events/posters_on_the_hill/) in Washington, D.C. are due by/before Nov. 4, 2016. The Posters on the Hill event includes an evening poster session and reception as well as other activities for both the undergraduate student presenter(s) and the faculty research adviser. If needed, contact the WVU Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) for help with the application. OUR will aid in securing travel funding and making travel arrangements for selected undergrad and faculty mentor.

ENGL 257: Science Fiction and Fantasy

“The Great Explainer”: Isaac Asimov, Science, Science Fiction, and Scientific Literacy - Professor Jay Cole                                               

He coined the word “robotics.”  His Foundation Trilogy was voted “Best All-Time Series” by the World Science Fiction Convention.  He wrote or edited more than 500 books on topics ranging from the Bible to biochemistry, from the Sun to Shakespeare, from genetics to Gilbert and Sullivan.  In this course, we will examine the writings of Isaac Asimov and discover how he earned the nickname, “The Great Explainer.”  From his science books and essays to his science fiction novels and short stories, Asimov helped to popularize and explain science for millions of readers around the world.  How did he do it?  At a time when scientific literacy is more important than ever, we will study one of the most eloquent and effective champions of scientific literacy and his impact.  As an added bonus, the WVU Library has one of the world’s largest collections of Asimov materials.  We will spend time exploring that collection to learn more about this remarkable writer and his legacy.

Nath Lecture -The Dawn of Gravitational-Wave Astronomy

Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Sean McWilliams, will discuss the international collaboration that has detected gravitational waves. He will share about the recent discovery and observations, their overall impact, and what lies ahead for this new field. The lecture will be on Tuesday, Nov. 1st at 7:30 pm in Brooks Hall Room 202. Brazil: Honors Pre-Med Global Service Learning (Spring 2017)

This program takes place primarily in Santarém, Brazil, providing students with an opportunity to understand healthcare delivery in Amazonian Brazil. Beyond visiting Afro-Brazilian or riverine villages in the Amazon on a medical boat, students will be exposed to the rapidly growing economy of Northern Brazil. Students will complete service activities with Amizade’s community partner, Fundação Esperança.
