Our Children Our Future WVU Student Chapter

Come be a part of the Our Children Our Future WVU Student Chapter! As the student organization Faculty Advisor, I would like to invite you to attend our first big kick-off meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 pm in the Mountain Room in the Mountainlair. The meeting will last no more than one hour.

A brief explanation of what the OCOF WVU Student Chapter is all about:

We believe that every West Virginia student and child should have an equal opportunity to lead happy, healthy lives. And, we believe that there is no better way to ensure a better future for our state than to invest in our youth. Along with other Our Children Our Future student organizations, we are building a network of student power across West Virginia. The Our Children Our Future Campaign is a coalition made up of 170+ organizations throughout West Virginia. We are focused on building a better West Virginia by vigorously working on leadership development, community engagement, student power, and policy change.

If community engagement, public health & wellness, or grassroots advocacy sparks your interest, this is the student organization for you. By joining our group, you’ll learn more about student issues and child poverty work throughout West Virginia and the way people are taking action to address them.

We are also looking to become partners with other WVU student organizations. If you are already active in another group that shares the missions of both fostering student-led activism and advocating for policy-based solutions for improving our state, then please attend this meeting on Feb. 22nd to learn how we can work together!

What we have planned for this semester already:

1. Attending the Kids and Families Lobby Day in Charleston on Tuesday, Feb. 14
2. Planning and attending a targeted lobby day in Charleston for our student chapter on Friday, March 31 (will pick issues from the 2017 Policy Platform priorities and visit our legislators)
3. In coordination with other like-minded student organizations, plan a student organizing workshop, led by Our Children Our Future founder, Stephen Smith (in April)
4. Assisting with the planning of the Youth WV Power Building Conference, which will be held at Marshall University, September 8-10.

Current student leadership team includes: Dillon Muhly-Alexander (Founder and President), Roark Sizemore, Chrissy Packtor, and Emma Harrison

No need to RSVP for the meeting, but please do reach out to me if you have any questions! We hope to see you there and we look forward to working with you.
