HIST 225 - H01
South Asia: Ghandi and Beyond
Prof. Mark Tauger
MWF 11:30-12:30 pm
You’ve probably heard of the Taj Mahal, Mahatma Gandhi, Bollywood, and high-tech Bangalore, but there’s much more to know about India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. This course will introduce you to the histories and current situations of these countries. The histories begin with cultures and ideas very different from the West, but the British conquest made South Asia a fascinating blend of Western and Asian cultures and brought some of the most dramatic political struggles in history. Contemporary South Asia is booming economically but struggling with all the major world problems - environmental pollution, water shortages, terrorism, poverty and wealth – as well as many of its own – women’s rights, ethnic and religious conflicts, higher education, corruption. This class will provide you with the knowledge you need to understand events in an extremely important part of the world.
